A paediatric dentist is a specialist who is qualified to provide dental treatment to patients ranging from infants, toddlers, children to adolescents and patients with special needs. A paediatric dentist requires an additional two to three years of formal education and clinical training after the completion of a dental doctorate degree.
By starting scheduled visits to the dentist at a young age, you are setting the foundation of healthy dental behaviours and habits for your child. This ensures that children and their parents form knowledge to avoid oral disease for a lifetime.
What Infection Control practices are used at Oakville Children’s Dentistry and Credit Valley Children’s Dentistry?
The health and safety of our patients and staff are our number one priority. Our offices have always strictly adhered to the recommendations and standards set out by the Royal College of Dentists of Ontario and Ontario Public Health.
Many additional measures have also been implemented to keep us all safe during this pandemic. These include fully enclosing our operatories, medical-grade air purifiers placed throughout the office, all staff and doctors undergoing Covid Screening twice daily, routine disinfection of all touch surfaces in public areas, and limited access and capacity into our office to name a few.
Dental examinations, radiographs (x-rays), diet and oral hygiene instructions are routine components of a consultation. We also provide these common treatments/procedures to ensure your child has a healthy smile:
Sealants are placed over your child’s tooth, not because there is decay, but to prevent any decay. They are used when the tooth is more vulnerable to decay because of its shape and deep grooves that are hard to clean and maintain.
In teeth with small to average size decay, we will attempt to restore the cavity with a tooth coloured material. This type of filling bonds to the tooth and supports the remaining tooth structure. It is also highly aesthetic, blending in with the natural tooth.
Stainless Steel Crowns/Caps:
A stainless steel crown is a “cap” placed over a tooth with extensive decay to restore its strength, shape, size and appearance. They are typically used on molars and back teeth when a white filling wouldn’t be strong enough.
When a deep cavity gets into the nerve (or pulp) of the tooth, treatment must be completed to prevent development of an abscess or infection. A pulpotomy treatment involves removal of the nerve in the crown (or top) of the tooth. This area is then sterilized and sealed prior to placement of an appropriate restoration.
